JAKARTA. The energy needs to support economic development is increasing, while conventional energy reservation such as fuel and coal is decreasing. That is why the government keeps on optimizing the alternative energy resources to realize national energy defense. The development of new renewable energy will be improved to decrease addiction towards energy fossil-based.
 
The prospect of new and renewable energy utilization (EBT) is very big and various. Based on the data of Indonesian reservation and renewable energy production 2007, the EBT utilization was 5, 921 MW (3.64%) from total potential 162, 770 MW. The highest utilization is micro hydro energy resource which reached 17. 22% and the lowest utilization was wind energy 0. 01%.

EBT utilization has done by the government through Listrik Desa Program, Interconnection of Renewable Energy Generator, Power Plant (PLTS), Desa Mandiri Energi (DME), and bio fuel. The utilization and the development of new and renewable energy (EBT) to decrease the addiction toward conventional energy cannot be delayed because EBT development is the future of Indonesian and countries around the world.

Besides issuing policy as the basic law of new and renewable energy development, the government based on Presidential Regulation No. 4, 2010 about Position, Task and Function of State Ministry and also Organization Structure, Task and Function of Echelon I, State Ministry forms a new unit in the same level as Echelon I in Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (Directorate General of New Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation). This new unit formulates and implements the policies and technique standardization in new energy field, renewable and conservation energy.

By the forming of this Directorate General of New Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation, it is hoped that new renewable energy development could be more optimal so that the national energy target related to new renewable energy utilization could be more than 17% up to 2025. (AK)
