Wayang Windu II Geothermal Powerplant Begins Operation

The Wayang Windu Geothermal Powerplant, planned to be officially opened today (22/6) by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Purnomo Yusgiantoro, is expected to increase the capacity of the Java-Bali power system.  Wayang Windu – located in Pengalengan, West Java – is  expected to provide an extra 117 MW of electricity.

This plant is developed by PT. Star Energy Geothermal (Wayang Lindu) Ltd. in a Joint Operating Contract with PT. Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE).  This plant is part of the 10.000 MW Electricity Acceleration Program, by harnessing environmentally-friendly energy.

Geothermal energy in West Java currently generates a total of 940 MW, spread out across four locations: Awibengkok Bogor field with 375 MW, Kamojang Garut field (200 MW), Derajat Garut (255 MW), and Wayung Windu field (110 MW).

In the 10.000 MW electricity acceleration program, the government will optimize geothermal potential by 48%, targeting 6,3% in the national energy mix by 2025.  Indonesia has one of the biggest geothermal potential in the world, estimated at 27.510 MW with a total capacity of 1.052 MW.  These potentials are spread out over 256 locations, mostly in Java.
