The East Kalimantan electricity system consists of one interconnecting and several isolated systems. The Mahakam is interconnected to a transmission system of 150kV. Isolated systems consists of Berau, Sangatta, Petung, Nunukan, Bulungan, Bontang, Tanah Grogot, Malinau, Kota Bangun, Melak, Kerang, Muara Koman, Sebatik, Tanjung Selor, Batu Sopang, and Tanjung Aru.
The Mahakam electrical system is currently on a surplus although in an alert state, where electricity reserves is lower than the largest plant unit. Deficit systems consist of Sangatta, Petung, Tanah Grogot, Malinau, and Tanjung Selor.
The Miniister of Energy and Mineral Resources regulation Number 236-12/23/600.2/2009 on Electricity Supply Crisis Condition, dated May 20 2009, has stated that the Petung, Tanah Grogot, and Nunukan systems are currently classified as areas currently suffering from electricity crisis.
