India Wind Program Most Advanced in Asia

The government of India is currently developing powerplants that utilizes renewable energy.  Among the several types of renewable energy currently being developed, wind energy accounts for 70% of the renewable energy capacity in India.

This was stated by Indian Minister of Power, Susyil Kumar Shinde while the Minister of Energy of Mineral Resources, Purnomo Yusgiantoro and the Indonesian delegation in New Delhi (7/9).

India has been at the forefront of Asia’s wind power industry during the past several years.  One of the leading company in this sector is Tata group’s NTPC.  Tata Power and Reliance Power are two private companies in the wind power generation sector.

One other major player in the sector in Suzlon Energy, which has succeeded in cutting power generation costs in a short span of time.  During 2006, Suzlon power generation costs from wind energy is at Rs. 5 or Rp. 1.042 per kWh.  This has dropped to Rs. 3.5 or Rp. 730 per kWh.

Minister Shinde elaborated that as part of India’s national project on climate change, the government has mandated power companies to use renewable energy by 5% towards their total energy capacity.  This program began in 2009 and is targeted to be achieved by 2010.  The minimum portion of renewable energy will then be increased by 1% annually for the next 10 years.
