Nuclear Power Plant Development Requires Thorough Research

The use of nuclear power to fuel power plants would require a careful and thorough research.  Although electricity demands have risen drastically, the government is committed to optimize the use of alternative energy as a fuel source.

Even though several neighboring countries are intent on developing nuclear power, the Indonesian government will only consider this option after all other means have been optimized.  “The development of nuclear power plants will require a very comprehensive and careful research” explains the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Darwin Saleh on Friday (5/2).

The Minister further added several considerations which must be accounted for, namely from expert circles and local communities.  The government is committed to continue developing alternative sources of energy, including nuclear when deemed necessary.

Alternative sources of energy which may be used to fuel power plants include s coal, gas, and geothermal energy.  Indonesia has a geothermal energy potential of 28.000 MW (40% of the total global reserve), with a total potential of 13.440 MW and reserve of 14.473 MW, spread over 265 locations.  Out of this total, its current usage for electricity is only at 4% or 1.189 MW.

The government will continue to optimize the environmentally-friendly proven geothermal energy as a source of fuel to power the Phase II Accelerated Electricity Program.  Geothermal energy in the program have only reached 3.583 MW out of a total capacity of 10.677 MW.
