The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources arrived in New Delhi today (7/9) to meet five Indian ministers and the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). The five ministers consist of the Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Minister of Power, Minister of Coal, Minister of Steel, and the Minister of Petroleum.

The Minister and delegation arrived in Bangalore, India on Saturday (5/9) to visit Bharat Earth Movers Limited, a mining heavy equipment manufacturing company which also produces trains and military equipments for the Indian military.

India is currently building a 4000MW power project designated UMPP (Ultra Mega Power Project), projected to be completed by 2012. This project, which is mostly located in coastal areas, shall be powered by imported coals due to the fact that domestic coals are used to power existing small and medium power plants.

India’s coal reserve is currently at 250 billion tons. In order to fulfill demands for the UMPP, India have imported coals from several countries, including an annual amount of 13 million tons from Indonesia.
