Queensland – Indonesia Energy Cooperation to be Increased

Cooperation between Indonesia and the Australian state of Queensland will continue to increase due to the latter’s strategic role as a mining partner which shares many similarities with Indonesia.

“The Queensland government is currently exploring Coal Bed Methane (CBM) as a source of energy, with 60% of the local energy needs is sourced from CBM”, explains the Special Staff to the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Denie Tampubolon in Jakarta (5/3), after accompanying Minister Darwin Saleh to Queensland.

Apart from being the largest mining state in Australia, many Queensland companies have invested in the Indonesian mining sector, including Leighton and Thiess.  Cooperation between Indonesia and Queensland must be increased in the forthcoming future to develop renewable energy which has yet to be optimized in Indonesia.

Indonesian CBM potential is far greater than those of Queensland, but due to the latter’s head start and greater experience, Indonesia needs to learn from Queensland and is expected to exceed their CBM production, explains Dennie.

Investor concerns regarding the Mining Law which regulates Domestic Market Obligation (DMO), the Indonesian delegation has explained that this policy will also be followed by a coal pricing regulation.  “Investors need not worry because domestic coal prices will be set according to global prices” remarked Denie.
