BANDUNG. Volcanology and Disaster Mitigation Center (PVG) increased Seulawah Agam Mountain into Alert Status (Level II). Increasing of this status apply from September 1st 2010, on 16.00 WIB. This increasing status was based on evaluation result of earthquake data, visual supervision and other related data.
Along January to August 2010, visual supervision of Seulawah Agam Mountain did not show surface phenomenon changing significantly. Even though visually, volcanic activities of Seulawah Mountain do not increase significantly, but based on fluctuating earthquake data this mountain tend to increase its volcanic activity. So that starting from September 1st 2010, on 16.00 WIB, the status of Seulawah Mountain increased from “Normal” (level I) to “Alert” (Level II),” says the head of PVG Surono.
Related to the increasing of this status, the head of PVG recommended citizens/visitors of Seulawah Mountain not to do hiking activity or go near up to 3 km radius from the active crater. Besides, citizens surrounding Seulawah Mountain are asked to be calm but alert, not to be provoked about the issue of Seulawah explosion and hoped to obey the direction of local SATLAK PB and SATKORLAK.
Seulawah Agam ( 1.726 meters below sea level) is one of three active strato volcanoes type A in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province. Its geographic position is in 05? 26' 50'' LS, and 95? 39' 54" BT, administratively belongs to Seulimeum Subdistrict, Aceh Besar District, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province. The shortest rest period of this mountain is 136 years and the longest is 239 years, and the last eruption happened in parasite crater on January 12-13th 1839 in Heutz crater in form of phreatic eruption.
