BANDUNG. The Head of Center for Vulcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), Geological Agency, Ministry of EMR, Surono stated that Watch Status (Level III) Mt. Papandayan has a potential disaster in form of freatic eruption immediately which is followed by the exit of poisonous gas or directed lateral blast.
“The other disaster potency of Mt. Papandayan is the cliff avalanches surrounding the crater of Mt. Papandayan which could trigger the lava. Besides, there are material buildup as the result of eruption in Mt. Papandayan complex which is recorded almost 3 million m3, in the upstream of Cibeureum River and Ciparugpug River. It will cause volcanic mudflow following the river,” says Surono.
Based on the information of Observation Post Officer of Mt. Papandayan in Pakuwon Village, Cisurupan Sub-District, on September 18th, 2011 there were 18 shallow volcanic quakes, 6 deep volcanic quakes and 8 far tectonic quakes. On September 19th, 2011 at 00.00 – 06.00 was recorded 3 shallow volcanic quakes, 3 deep volcanic quakes, and 2 far tectonic quakes.
The Officer of Mt. Papandayan will supervise intensively to evaluate the activity of Mt. Papandayan, and also understand the activity of Mt. Papandayan has to be done intensively by socialization concerning the danger of Mt. Papandayan explosion.
Related to Mt. Papandayan in Watch Status, the Head of PVMBG recommended citizens to be calm and not to be influenced by irresponsible issue, obey the instruction of Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Garut District, Bandung District and West Java Province. “Citizens/Tourism may not get close to the crater of Mt. Papandayan in the peak of Mt. Papandayang within the radius of 2 km from the complex of Papandayan Crater,” says Surono. (AK)
