BANDUNG. The response of earthquake happened in southwest Nusa Dua, Bali based on information of BMKG, USGS, United States of America, and also other data are follow:

1. The earthquake happened on Thursday, October 13th, 2011 at 10:16:27 WIT (Local Time). Based on information of BMKG, the epicenter of earthquake is in coordinate 9,89° South Lat. and 114,53° East Long., in magnitude 6, 8 SR (Richter Scale) 10 km in depth, 143 km of southwest Nusa Dua, Bali. Based on information of USGS, the epicenter was in coordinate 9,378° South Lat. and 114,628° East Long., in magnitude 6, 1 SR and 35, 1 km in depth, 100 km of southwest Nusa Dua, Bali.

2. Geological condition of areas affected by the earthquake:

The epicenter was at the sea. The nearest areas with the epicenter are especially in southern coast of Bali Island, Lombok, and east part of Java. Most of those areas are composed by alluvium, and Quaternary volcanic sediment. In the areas composed by alluvium and weathered Quaternary sediment was predicted that earthquake shaking will be stronger because this stones are dust, loose, not compact and strengthening shaking effect, so it is so risky of earthquake shaking.    

3. The Earthquake Effect:

Based on information of USGS, the earthquake was felt in intensity IV-V in Kuta and Nusa Dua, Bali. Intensity IV MMI was in Banyuwangi, Kedunghaji, Grajagan, and Sukamande, East Java. Based on information of Observation Post of Mt. Batur, Bali, the earthquake shaking was felt in amplitude maximum 38 mm for 240 second. According to information of one citizen in Bali, tourism in Nusa Dua and Kuta Beach were panic and injured about 40 people due to the earthquake. Based on VIVA News, the earthquake caused severe damage to the building of Legal Aid Society (LBH) located in Jalan Plawa No. 57 Denpasar. The information of Detik.com, there were some damage buildings, in which the roof feel down and the wall cracked in Denpasar and Nusa Dua. The workers constructing one of DPRD Banyuwangi Building were also panic because the roofs feel down. A very quite strong shaking was also felt by Banyuwangi citizens for about a minute. It was also reported that there was one building collapse. Besides in Mataram and surrounding, the earthquake was also felt in Taliwang, West Sumbawa District, which caused citizens spreading out the house.

4. Cause of the Earthquake:

Based on the position of epicenter in 10 km depth (BMKG) and 35, 1 (USGS) was predicted that the earthquake was associated with active fault developing in seabed of South Indian Ocean of Bali and Java Island.

5. Recommendation:

•    Citizens are asked to be calm and obey the instruction and information of local government, not to be influenced by irresponsible issue concerning earthquake and tsunami.

•    It is predicted that the aftershock earthquake will be smaller from the main earthquake; however citizens have to be alert.

•    The earthquake does not cause tsunami because even though its epicenter was at the sea but its energy is not enough to produce seabed dislocation. (AK)
