BANDUNG. The Center for Vulcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), Geological Agency, MEMR announced the recommendation for citizens and tourism surrounding Mt. Lokon not to get close and do activity within the radius 2.5 km from Tompaluan Crater. Based on visual and seismic observation and also the explosion potency of Mt. Lokon up to October 26th, 2011 at 6 a.m. WITA (Central Indonesia Standard Time), the activity level of Mt. Lokon is Watch (Level III).
“The result of visual and instrumental observation, Mt. Lokon activity is fluctuating, tends to decrease. The potency of eruption is possibly still happening by the record of tremor activity. However, when and how big the intensity of the eruption could not be known,” says the Head of PVMBG, Surono.
According to him, the danger of Mt. Lokon eruption is in form of volcanic ash which spread depend on the direction and wind speed and also magmatic explosion followed by incandescent material in form of lapilli and heavy rain ash or without followed by pyroclastic avalanches immediately. If hot cloud happens surrounding Mt. Lokon, citizens has to be alert of hot cloud along the Pasapehan River. “Incandescent material happen within the radius of 2 km from Tompaluan Crater, while heavy ash rain within the radius 2.5 km,” says Surono.
The area affected by ash eruption of Mt. Lokon is west and northwest side, especially in Agotey Village and Lema Village in distance of 7 – 7.5 km from Tompaluan Crater by having maximum ash thickness is 0.5 cm.
Based on threaten level in Watch Status. PVMBG recommend citizens and tourism not to get close and do activity within the radius 2.5 km from Tompaulan Crater (the centre of the activity). Citizens may come back to their home, but have to improve caution to the eruption of Mt. Lokon. However, for citizens live in Ossa Kinilow I are prioritized to be completed with communication equipment and manual early warning equipment such as speaker, bells, kentongan, and others. (AK)
