More about LGV and CNG

JAKARTA. By April 1st, the government will restrict the consumption of subsidized BBM. For private vehicles could use non subsidized BBM such as pertamax or Liquefied Gas for Vehicles (LGV). While for public transportation and taxi could use Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). So, what is LGV and CNG?

LGV is a gas fuel formulated for motor vehicles using spark ignition engine consisting of propane (C3) and  butane (C4). Shortly, LGV is LPG for vehicles.

LGV combustion quality is equivalent to RON 98 and environmentally friendly. Its pressure is about between 8-12 bar, far smaller than CNG which pressure reach 200 bar. LGV price is higher than subsidized BBM, bit lower than non-subsidized BBM. LGV is more flexible to be used in remote areas of gas resources or not having natural gas resources.

While Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is a gas fuel made by compressing methane (CH4) extracted from natural gas. CNG is storage and distributed inside vessel pressure, usually in form of cylinder. CNG has 200 bar pressure, and having a tank bigger than LGV.

CNG has been used in some countries, especially for public transportation. In Indonesia, public transportation generally have used CNG, such as Transjakarta bus. Its price is Rp 3.100 per liter equivalent to premium (lsp) and is planned to be raised becoming Rp 4.100 per liter.

CNG is used in areas having natural gas resources or having natural gas pipelines. No wonder if CNG SPBG is limited. (AK)
