MINISTRY OF ENERGY AND MINERAL RESOURCES REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA
PRESS RELEASE NUMBER: 23/HUMAS KESDM/2012 Date: July 9th, 2012
MINISTER OF EMR INAUGURATED BIOMASS PLTU 2 X 15 MW |
| Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Jero Wacik today, Monday (9/7) inaugurated 2 units of Biomass Steam Power Plant (PLTU), each in capacity of 15 MW owned by PT. Growth Asia in Medan Industri Area (KIM) 3, Medan, North Sumatera. PT. Growth Asia is a company under the management of Growth Steel Group (GSG) by having the core business of integrated steel. Biomass PLTU 2 x 15 MW was built in 2011 and using renewable energy fuel such as palm shells, rice husks, corncobs and wood powder (Waste to Energy). Basically, the construction of Biomass PLTU is meant to fulfill our own need. However, the produced power exceeds the need, so there is excess power for 20 MW. The excess power is sold to PT PLN (Persero) Region North Sumatera. Previously, PT Growth Sumatera Industry, which was also one of a company under the management of Growth Steel Group, had built 1 x 15 MW in 2008 and 1 x 15 MW in 2010. The power of 15 MW is used for our own need and the excess power for 15 MW is sold to PT. PLN (Persero) Region North Sumatera. Up to June 2012, the total sold out-electricity power by Growth Steel Group through PT.Growth Sumatera Industry and PT. Growth Asia to PT. PLN was for 35 MW (from the total capacity of 60MW). By the average diesel oil price for industry Rp 10.000/liter and the price of electricity Rp 975/kWh (Minister of EMR’s Regulation Number 4/2012), then the existence of Biomass PLTU owned by Growth Steel Group has saved for Rp 621 Billion/year. Mastering the technology of plant equipment fabrication system and having workers, PT Growth Asia has been able to create Biomass PLTU development by having local contents reach for 70 %. The existence of this Biomass PLTU not only increase energy security and energy autonomy but also is able to decrease green house gas emission due to biomass is part of renewable energy or clean energy, so through the increase of Biomass PLTU development will hasten sustainable energy development. North Sumatera Province has abundance biomass waste in palm plantation and other agricultural areas and also in wood industries. Hopefully by the Biomass PLTU will encourage other investor to build the similar Biomass PLTU which eventually will help increasing electricity supply in North Sumatera areas. |
