The Government will boost up the development of geothermal in many parts of the country. This development is part of the effort to diversify energy sources and to help reducing dependency on oil. Indonesia is home to around 40% of world total geothermal resources but its utilization is still limited. The Directorate General of Coal, Mineral and Geothermal has completed the evaluation of 5 locations prepared for geothermal working areas (WKP). The five working areas are now ready for tender.
The data consists of geoscience data (geophysical, geochemical, topography and temperature), estimation of reserves, land status, geothermal conservation and geothermal system data. The five areas are:
1. WKP of SEULAWAH AGAM area, ACEH BESAR district, NANGGROE ACEH DARUSALAM (Minister of EMR Decree NO. 1786 K/33/MEM/2007)
2. WKP of JAILOLO area, WEST HALMAHERAdistrict, North Moluccas, (Minister of EMR Decree NO. 1787.K/33/MEM/2007)
3. WKP TELAGA NGEBEL area, PONOROGO and MADIUN districts , EAST JAVA (Minister of EMR Decree NO. 1788.K/33/MEM/2007)
4. WKP GUNUNG UNGARAN area, SEMARANG and KENDAL districts, CENTRAL JAVA (Minister of EMR Decree NO. 1789.K/33/MEM/2007)
5. WKP GUNUNG TAMPOMAS area, SUMEDANG and SUBANG district, WEST JAVA (Minister of EMR Decree NO. 1790.K/33/MEM/2007).
