Kahara PLTP will Increase the Reliability of Java – Bali Transmission System

Jakarta - Director of Geothermal Energy, Directorate General of New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation (NREEC), Ida Nuryanti Finahari visited the project of Kahara Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) in Tasikmalaya District, West Java Province on Friday (2/2). Administratively, Kahara PLTP is located among 5 districts: Sumedang, Garut, Majalengka, Tasikmalaya dan Ciamis by having development plan for 30 MW.

The capacity of the project is 30 MW and having total investment for Rp 2.5 trillion. The electricity produced from the Kahara PLTP will increase the reliability of Java - Bali transmission system by having additional supply for 227 GWh/year. The production will brighten 33 thousand houses. Kahara PLTP utilizes clean and environmentally friendly energy enabling it to decrease greenhouse gas emission for 202 million ton CO2/year.

The project also created new employment for 2,700 workers consisting of local workers for 98.1% (26.5% from Garut and Tasikmalaya District, while 71.6% from outside Garut and Tasikmalaya District), as well as foreign workers for 1.9%.

The construction of Kahara PLTP also gives direct benefit to the surrounding people materialized in the form of Community Development program. In 2017, PGE has materialized Community Development program for Rp 830,000,000 for education, social, health, and economic empowerment activities for local people.

Not only developing the surrounding people, Kahara PLTP also has a great contribution for the increase of Regional Original Income (PAD) through the deposit of Production Bonus directly to Provincial General Treasury that is prioritized for the development of surrounding people. The amount of the Production Bonus is regulated by the Government through Governmental Regulation Number 28 of 2016 and Minister of EMR Regulation Number 23 of 2017. The purpose of the bonus production is to give as much benefit as possible for the surrounding people due to the project of PLTP.

The amount of production bonus from Kahara PLTP Unit-1 in 2018 was planned for Rp 1.1 billion that will be distributed to 5 (five) producing districts: Garut, Tasikmalaya, Sumedang, Majalengka, dan Ciamis. Kahara PLTP is going to Commercial Operation Date (COD) by February 28, 2018 and inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Indonesia. (AK)
