Indonesia, Singapore Optimistic about Greater Cooperation in Energy Transition

A bilateral meeting between Indonesia and Singapore was again held virtually on Monday (26/10). Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR), Arifin Tasrif, led the Indonesian delegation to discuss issues of bilateral and regional cooperation with the Singapore delegation which was led by Dr Tan See Leng, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office as well as Second Minister for Trade and Industry and Second Minister for Manpower.

At the meeting, Minister of EMR reiterated that international cooperation was needed to support the energy transition. "The bilateral meeting with Singapore is expected to further enhance cooperation in dealing with various challenges of energy transition", said Arifin.

The two ministers agreed on the abundant potential for energy transition cooperation that the two countries could develop and needed to further strengthen, for example the geothermal potential in Sumatra. Singapore also expressed its appreciation for the participation of Minister of EMR in Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) 2020.

In bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, a quite vital issue is the gas supply to Singapore. Additionally, Singapore has made various investments in Indonesia, from oil and gas, electricity, mineral and coal, to new and renewable energy.

In regional cooperation, Singapore chairs the Regional Energy Policy and Planning Subsector Network (REPP-SSN), which is responsible for preparing the ASEAN Plan of Action on Energy Cooperation Phase 2: 2021-2025. This cooperation document will be ratified by ASEAN's Energy Ministers at the 38th ASEAN Ministers' on Energy Meeting in November 2020.

REPP-SSN will also launch the 6th ASEAN Energy Outlook, which has been developed based on energy policies and targets of ten ASEAN member countries. This document will serve as the main source of energy information, analysis and projections in the region, and provide in-depth insights into ASEAN energy supply and consumption trends. (IY)
