Govt to Evaluate Eight Geothermal Fields

Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) is preparing the evaluation of eight geothermal fields. Head of Research and Development Agency of EMR, Dadan Kusdiana, said that evaluation would start with Cikakak 1 and Cikakak 2 fields, part of Cisolok field in Sukabumi Regency, West Java Province. The location has been selected based on data from the Geological Agency.

Dadan highlighted that the evaluation process should have considered risk potential and mitigation. "Risk potential that should have been anticipated includes lack of data, necessary equipment or software not available, changes of geothermal field location, Covid-19 impacts, and funding", said Dadan in Cisolok, Sukabumi, last weeked.

One of the highlighted issues is limited capacity of human resource. Dadan suggested the addition of competent staff, especially at BLU Center for Research and Development of Electricity and New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Technologies (P3TKEBTKE).

To solve this issue, Directorate General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (NREEC) will form a team which is made up of officials from Geological Agency and DG NREEC as well as Advisors to Minister of EMR, who will work synergically to assess the evaluation.

The BLU P3TKEBTKE is conducting peer review to survey the proposal, data from detailed surveys (geological, geochemical, and geophysical), and conceptual models of the eight fields. The BLU P3TKEBTKE will also set the bore location (well targeting) of the exploration wells based on the results of the peer review of each fields.

Head of P3TKEBTKE, Chrisnawan Anditya, explained that his agency would also examine non-technical aspects such as existence of access road, location of water springs, and surface inclination.

Meanwhile, a researcher at PPPTMGB "LEMIGAS", Panca Wahyudi, explained that the Geological Agency has data from previous surveys. However, these data must be re-evaluated because geothermal reservoirs are different from oil and gas ones. Drilling location must be very accurate that a 10-meter miss will be intolerable.

The evaluation of geothermal fields will include well targeting, peer review, model conceptual analysis, and numerical simulation. Besides Cisolok field, evaluation will also be conducted at Jailolo field (South Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province), Bittuang (Tana Toraja Regency, South Sulawesi Province), Nage (Ngada Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province), Ciremai (Kuningan Regency, West Java), Marana (Donggala Regency, Central Sulawesi), Gunung Endut (Lebak Regency, Banten) and Sembalun (East Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara).(IY)
