Greater International Cooperation Important to Support Energy Transition

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) Arifin Tasrif emphasized the importance of greater international cooperation to support the energy transition. This was stated by Arifin at Singapore International Energy Week 2020 on the theme of Creating Our Low Carbon Energy Together which was held as a hybrid event on Tuesday (27/10).

Arifin said in his speech that the Covid-19 pandemic had triggered an economic downturn, reduced energy demand, and slowed down the rate of transition to both clean energy and sustainable energy. In this regard, Arifin considered that energy production had to be adjusted and new opportunities needed to be continuously created.

"Indonesia has a mission to switch from conventional energy to renewable energy. Therefore, Indonesia has set targets for the development of renewable energy and energy conservation, as mandated in the National Energy Policy and the Nationally Determined Contribution submitted to the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change)," said Arifin.

To meet these targets, regulations and action plans have been implemented in various subsectors, and are supported by capacity building and research. Indonesia has also tried to apply smarter methods in the energy business so that its national energy industry is ready to compete in the global market of industry 4.0.

Arifin further explained that Indonesia had been increasing its use of renewable energy for the electricity grid, implementing an energy management system for industries and buildings, and developing CPO-based, green fuel projects targeted to be ready for production by 2023.

"Indonesia is building the first floating solar power plant in Cirata in West Java Province, on top of the existing hydropower reservoir. The combination of floating solar PV and hydro aims to mitigate intermittent solar PV while utilizing the surface area of the reservoir, and such development does not require land acquisition," said Arifin.

To support low carbon development, the Indonesian government has also implemented various energy efficiency programs, including mandatory energy management and the Minimum Energy Performance Standards. Indonesia has also adopted national standards for energy management systems, which will gradually become the national standards for industries.

Concluding his speech, Arifin emphasized the importance of greater international cooperation to support the development of renewable energy. "In the development of renewable energy, we cannot walk alone considering the complex challenges of the energy transition. International cooperation is needed to support Indonesia to become self-reliant and more capable and qualified to compete in the global energy industry," Arifin concluded. (IY)
