Energy Council to Install Rooftop Solar Systems on Employees' Homes

To help promote the use of New, Renewable Energy (NRE), Secretary General of Indonesia National Energy Council (DEN) Djoko Siswanto signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Financing and Installation of Rooftop Solar Systems. The MoU is made between DEN Secretariat General (DEN-SG), state-owned bank PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), and state-owned electronic manufacturer PT Len Industri, and covers the plan to finance and install rooftop solar systems on the office and employees' homes of DEN-SG.

"The Memorandum of Understanding will help us realize, promote, and implement the NRE use, through the installation and purchase of solar cells. It will also support the realization of the 23% NRE mix target by 2025," said Djoko on Thursday (21/1).

Additionally, the cooperation will facilitate installation and purchase of solar systems to be used on the office of DEN-SG, and especially on its employees' homes. The solar systems offered in the cooperation can be bought without a guarantee nor a down payment. The loan itself provides a long term which is adjusted to employees' financial capacity, while the solar system installation will not add the monthly electricity bill.

"For example, if our monthly electricity bill is Rp1.5 million, we'll only spend Rp1 million maximum if we install a solar system. So, we can save Rp500,000 to pay back the loan to buy the solar panel," continued Djoko.

Djoko expected the cooperation model will be copied by future consumers of rooftop solar systems. "I hope the MoU can be made a role model, a model for all consumers wishing to use rooftop solar systems. A number of state ministries have contacted me, expressing their interest. Units within the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources are also waiting the MoU implementation," he said.

The scope of the MoU includes the following:

  1. coordination of joint activities to finance rooftop solar systems;
  2. financing of rooftop solar systems installation;
  3. procurement of rooftop solar systems;
  4. training for rooftop solar systems operation and maintenance.

The main component of a rooftop solar system is solar modules, which local content level (TKDN) reaches 47.5%. A rooftop solar system can save electricity bill of up to 30%. (IY)
