CCUS Proposed for G20 Cooperation Project

Indonesia is currently holding the G20 Presidency for a year, from December 1, 2021 until the G20 Summit in November 2022. This year's G20 addresses three main topics, namely Global Health, Digital Economic Transformation, and Energy Transitions.

In terms of energy transitions, the Directorate General of Oil and Gas of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) intends to propose Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) as one of the collaborative projects during the G20 Presidency.

"The CCUS program during the G20 shows that our country is serious about protecting the environment. This is one of the consequences for countries that have ratified the Paris Agreement on Climate Change," said Director General of Oil and Gas, Tutuka Ariadji, in a town hall meeting with the rank and file of the Directorate of Oil and Gas Program Fostering, which was held at Ibnu Sutowo Building on Wednesday (19/1).

Tutuka suggested that Indonesia should establish multilateral cooperation with other G20 members so that CCUS becomes one of the cooperation projects in the G20. The G20 consists of 19 countries, i.e. South Africa, United States, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, India, Indonesia, United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, Germany, Canada, Mexico, Republic of Korea, Russia, France, China, Turkey, and the European Union (EU).

"Indonesia has indeed established cooperation with Japan, but this is not enough. We need to cooperate with other countries to expland the scale," said Tutuka.

Tutuka suggested Canada and the United States as countries to be partnered with because they have experience in CCUS. "We have enough time to establish multilateral cooperation so as to make CCUS one of the cooperation projects during the G20," he added.

The town hall meeting aims to maintain and develop silaturahmi (friendly bond) and work spirit as well serves as a discussion forum between leaders and employees. On this occasion, the Director of Oil and Gas Program Fostering, Dwi Anggoro Ismukurnianto, conveyed his unit's 2021 performance and 2022 work plans.

In 2021, the Directorate of Oil and Gas Program Fostering brought in Rp103.199 trillion of oil and gas non-tax state revenue (PNBP), while oil and gas investment hit USD15.9 billion or 94.59% out of the 2021 target of USD16.81 billion. The average ICP from January to December is USD68.47 per barrel.

In addition, the Directorate had also successfully implemented the policy to adjust gas prices for certain industries and electricity generation.

For 2022, the Directorate of Oil and Gas Program Fostering plans to increase the oil and gas investment to USD17 billion, improve the capacity of domestic oil and gas supporting businesses, encourage bilateral and multilateral cooperation, and revise the National Gas Transmission and Distribution Network Master Plan.

For the record, Indonesia's G20 Presidency carries the theme "Recover Together, Recover Stronger". Through this theme, Indonesia invites all countries in the world to work together to achieve a stronger and more sustainable recovery. There will be 150 events during the G20 Presidency 2022, which consist of the meetings held by Working Groups, Engagement Groups, Deputies/Sherpa, Ministers, and a G20 Summit, as well as side events. The CCS/CCUS issue will be one of the discussion topics in the side events. (IY)
