Domestic Coal Demand in 2020 was Met, Says Mineral and Coal Director General
Director General of Mineral and Coal of Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR), Ridwan Djamaluddin, presented the mineral and coal production and use in 2020 at the virtual Press Conference on Performance Report of 2020, Work Program for 2021, and Strategic Issues of the Mineral and Coal Subsector on Friday (15/1).
In 2020, domestic coal production reached 561 million tonnes or 102 percent of the targeted production 550 million tonnes. Meanwhile, domestic coal use was recorded at 132 million tonnes, or 85% of target 155 million tonnes. This volume has met domestic market obligation (DMO). Reduced DMO has been caused by lower consumption by PLN during the Covid-19 pandemic.
"We still have enough coal. We'll make the best use of it for economic activities while paying close attention to the environmental impacts of coal," said Ridwan.
Additionally, Ridwan presented domestic mineral production and use. Nickel processing and refining production in 2020 was up on previous years. Ferronickle production in 2020 was 1.462 million tonnes; Nickel Pig Iron (NPI) 860,500 tonnes; and nickel matte 91,700 tonnes. Next, production of copper cathodes was 268,600 tonnes; gold 65.9 tonnes; silver 335.2 tonnes; and tin 52,500 tonnes.
Compared to the 2020 plan, continued Ridwan, the realized use of several mineral commodities had increased. The realized use of gold was 112.7% or 37.1 tonnes; silver 100.9% or 79.4 tonnes; tin 290.4% or 2,900 tonnes; feronickel 337% or 337,000 tonnes; and NPI 73.7% or 411,000 tonnes. (IY)
