Energy Ministry, New Energy Nexus Indonesia Launch Hackathon SUPER CHARGE E-Mobility

The Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) has continuously collaborated with various parties to come up with new solutions and innovations in the energy sector. Most recently, the ministry gives support for the second virtual hackathon, [RE] energize Indonesia 2021, organized by New Energy Nexus Indonesia.

Coordinator for Various New Energy and Renewable Energy Program of Ministry of EMR, Tony Susandy, said that Ministry of EMR gives high appreciation for the hackathon, which raises the issue of renewables-based electric vehicles.

"We hope this event can trigger ideas and innovations in developing renewable energy-based electric vehicles in Indonesia, so that these ideas and innovations can create employment and improve the economy," continued Tony at the virtual press conference of the hackathon on Thursday (15/4).

Tony said that Ministry of EMR is preparing a grand energy strategy to accelerate Indonesia's energy transition in order to realize national energy security and independence. According to Tony, Indonesia is facing twofold energy challenges: demand increases while supply is limited.

The development of electric vehicles in Indonesia will continue because it has become a vision for Indonesia's energy development.

"The transformation towards fossil-free energy is something that is inevitable. Through this hackathon, we hope to get more ideas and innovations in the energy sector that have not proposed by many people," said Tony.

On the theme of electric mobility (e-mobility), this hackathon is designed to identify innovative ideas to help build an ecosystem in the electric mobility sector in Indonesia.

"Why the hackathon has the theme of electric mobility is because we see the sector is developing and will become one of the drivers of the economy and innovation in Indonesia in the future. Thus, it is important to provide spot, space, and support for renewables-based startups, especially those engaged in electric mobility," said Program Director of New Energy Nexus Indonesia, Diyanto Imam.

For the record, New Energy Nexus also held a hackathon in 2020 on the theme of Health and Productivity, which was in line with the challenges posed by the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The hackathon [RE] energize Indonesia also marks the third year of New Energy Nexus Indonesia's journey to build an inclusive ecosystem of renewable energy startups through funding, incubation and acceleration programs, and networking. To date, New Energy Nexus has completed 7 batches of incubation and acceleration programs, and guided more than 40 renewables startups in honing their business strategies and innovations.

Besides Ministry of EMR and New Energy Nexus, the online hackathon also involves the National Battery Research Institute, PT Surya Utama Nuansa, and other knowledge partners. The hackathon is open to individuals and teams with solutions and innovations in the e-mobility sector or its supporting ecosystem.

The hackathon offers a total prize of Rp100 million. Winners will get access to the Smart Energy Incubation and Acceleration program designed to support smart and renewable energy startups in Indonesia.

Through the SUPER CHARGE E-Mobility Ecosystem in Indonesia, New Energy Nexus Indonesia hopes to identify and support solutions that not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but also create quality jobs and economic opportunities for the people.

New Energy Nexus is not an unfamiliar name in the hackathon world. In collaboration with LG, Hyundai, and Kia, New Energy Nexus held the LGChem Battery Challenge in South Korea. It also held the Smart Energy Hackathon in Bangkok, Thailand. (IY)
