Mapping Out Direction of National Energy Development, Arifin: Innovation Needed

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR) is again making an inventory of energy source potentials from New, Renewable Energy (NRE). This inventory is aimed to boost the NRE usage within the energy mix to 23% by 2025.

"We inventory the potential. This is something we must discuss in detail. For example about capacity," Minister of EMR Arifin Tasrif explained when he opened the 8th Conference & Exhibition of IndoEBTKE Conex 2019 at Jakarta International Expo Kemayoran on Wednesday (6/11).

In terms of potential, Indonesia has had 400 Giga Watt (GW) of electricity potential generated by NRE sources. Arifin sees this potential as an opportunity for new business. "Of course the initiation of the Paris Agreement is an opportunity to propose the innovation in new businesses involving energy issues," said Arifin.

Arifin considered activities such as the IndoEBTKE Conex as a stimulus to again map out the direction of national energy development policy. "This activity (IndoEBTKE Conex) is indeed very useful to determine the direction of the national energy usage. We have a lot of energy sources that we have to utilize," he explained.

Arifin stresses the importance of detailed planning in order to increase NRE potential. He hopes the future share of NRE in the Electricity Supply General Master Plan (RUPTL) can be increased and made on target. "(The share) Is very small. For this reason, we must make planning efforts to optimize it," said Arifin.

For this purpose, Arifin opens himself to any input from relevant stakeholders. "I'm very open to get the best ideas that can boost NRE growth," he said.

On the same occasion, Chair of Indonesia Renewable Energy Society (METI), Surya Darma, explained this exhibition can be a potential to attract more investors in the renewable energy industry.

"I hope this exhibition can be a venue to improve investment climate and attract investors, as well as give a renewable future for the millennial," Surya concluded. (IY)
