Reinforcing Cooperation in Energy Sector, Indonesia-Japan Held 6th IJEF in Bali

To reinforce the bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and Japan, an annual energy forum was held today, Thursday (10/10) in Bali. The Indonesia-Japan Energy Forum (IJEF) this year enters its 6th year.

The IJEF is a meeting place between Indonesia and Japan to discuss the potential for increased cooperation in the energy and mineral resources sector. This forum also facilitates meetings between Indonesian and Japanese business to explore cooperation venture in the energy sector.

The Indonesian delegation was led by Secretary General of Ministry of EMR, Ego Syahrial, while the Japanese delegation was led by Deputy Commissioner for International Affairs-Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, METI, Tomohiro Kaneko.

In his opening speech, Ego Syahrial said that the Indonesia-Japan partnership is one of the strategic partnerships that has been long developed. Japan is one of Indonesia's strategic partners especially in the energy sector.

"Such solid relation that has been developed for a long time also contributes to peace, prosperity, and economic development of both countries. I believe the Indonesia-Japan Energy Forum has contributed the same, especially in the energy and mineral resources sector," Ego said.

The 6th Indonesia-Japan Energy Forum (IJEF) was the follow-up to the 5th IJEF which was held in May 2018 in Tokyo, Japan and which came up with a number of agreements. One of the agreements was a G-to-G MoU draft which was signed on the sidelines of the G20 meeting in June 2019.

"A year after the meeting in Tokyo, Indonesia and Japan have made a number of progress in various cooperation fields. Several cooperation opportunities have also been discussed progressively, including LNG distribution and electricity generation in eastern Indonesia," Ego added.

The 6th IJEF discussed the review progress and cooperation plan between the two countries. Several cooperation potentials discussed in the plenary session included the potential for oil and gas block development, LNG development cooperation, electricity, increase in coal added-value, and development of renewable energy.

In addition to the plenary session, the 6th IJEF was also made up of One-on-One Meetings that brought together and facilitated business discussions between the two countries in the energy sector.

"Minister Jonan has highlighted that in all these years, bilateral energy forums do not always come up with tangible results. Thus, for this year's IJEF, almost all Directors General and Heads of Agencies will both join the plenary session and lead one or two one-on-one meeting sessions, to ensure that we are heading in the right direction," Ego concluded.

During this forum, two MoU's were signed on comprehensive business-to-business cooperation between PT PLN (Persero) and Japan's leading corporations, namely Toshiba and Mitshubishi. The MoU's were the Study of Hydrogen Project between PLN and Toshiba, and the Joint Feasibility Study on PLN Factory Workshop Development between PLN, Mitsubishi Hitachi Power System, and Mitsubishi Corporation.
