We Start Off Developing Renewable Energy at the Same Time as Other Countries, Says HR Agency Head

Indonesian New, Renewable Energy (NRE) Human Resources (HR) have the same chance with those of other countries in the world because we started off developing NRE at relatively the same time as other countries, Head of the Human Resource Development Agency on Energy and Mineral Resources (BPSDM ESDM) Prahoro Yulijanto Nurtjahyo has said in a public lecture of the Solar Power Initiative Movement (Gerilya) program held online on Thursday (14/10).

"Speaking on renewable energy, our HR can still compete with other countries' HR because both of us start from scratch. This is different from what happened in the oil and gas, where our HR lag behind many developed countries," Prahoro emphasized.

However, Prahoro called on the Gerilya participants to continuously improve their skills and capabilities because HR competition was intense. "We are currently in a competition era, when companies and people who used to control the oil and gas business now shift to the renewable energy subsector, creating intense competition in job search," said Prahoro.

Prahoro said the solar power generation in particular would develop exponentially so that competent human resources were needed. "Speaking about solar power generation concerns not only the power plants but also the industry clusters. For example, those of you who major in Industrial Engineering may be fit to become equipment suppliers", explained Prahoro.

There are other industry clusters that support the continuity of solar power systems such as service provider, solar energy production, power plant transmission/distribution, and local customer service. "The choice depends on your individual expertise and competency," Prahoro added.

Prahoro also reminded the students of the importance of being unique and earning the appropriate certificate to compete in the career world. "Being unique is crucial nowadays, to distinguish one applicant from another. If you go to college just to get a degree, you'd better think again".

Prahoro referred to the 52 university students participating in the Gerilya program as superior human resources because they were selected out of 634 applicants from across Indonesia. Thus, it is expected that the Gerilya participants will be able to compete at both the national and international level.

The Gerilya program is a result of collaboration between the Ministry of EMR and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. It targets university students wishing to develop their competency in the new, renewable energy subsector, in particular rooftop solar. The program is expected to produce excellent human resources who will speed up the development of new, renewable energy in Indonesia. (IY)
