EMR Resuscitator Passes BPFK Tests

Ministry of EMR actively plays a role in mitigating the Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19) pandemic through a number of innovations. One of the innovations, namely powered emergency resuscitator, has passed the tests by Jakarta's Health Facility Security Office (BPFK) on 18 May 2020. The COVID-19 ESDM (ViCE) Z-Axis ventilator has been tested and met the requirements set in the Emergency Resuscitator Product Testing Method of BPFK Jakarta No. MK-UPK/BPFKJ/61/RS/0.

The testing was conducted at the Testing and Calibration Tool Lab of BPFK Jakarta on 11-14 May 2020 which included inspection/visual test on label and information, electrical safety test, performance test, and reliability test. The test results were officially delivered to Ministry of EMR by Head of BPFK Jakarta, J. Prastowo Nugroho, this Wednesday (20/5). After the powered emergency resuscitator named ViCE Z-Axis passes these tests, it is ready for clinical test.

ViCE Z-Axis is a respiratory aid needed by Covid-19 patients who generally experience breathing difficulties during critical time. Demand for respiratory aid has skyrocketed by 500-1,000% so that the existing medical equipment industry cannot meet the current demand. As a result, respiratory aid has become scarce and its price soars. Therefore, the EMR R&D Agency as well as other domestic agencies have developed respiratory aids such as emergency resuscitator, ventilator, and Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP).

ViCE Z-Axis which has been developed by the EMR R&D Agency since 4 April 2020 is a resuscitator bag pumped by using the mechanism system of Z-axis linear actuator and motor stepper.

"ViCE Z-Axis has been designed with the spirit of using easily accessible and assembled components," said Head of EMR R&D Agency, Dadan Kusdiana, in Jakarta on Wednesday (20/5).

ViCE Z-Axis gives out tidal volume (TV) of 300-500 ml in range for a respiratory rate (RR) of 10-20 breath per minute with an inspiratory and expiratory (I:E) ratio of 1:2. ViCE Z-Axis is equipped with a monitoring and alarm system that will inform electrical, gas, pressure, and tidal volume problems. The monitoring and alarm system is a safety requirement for usage. Moreover, ViCE can be operated for over 30 minutes with battery when the main electrical supply is disrupted.

Dadan explains that ViCE Z-Axis has been initiated by Minister of EMR. "The Minister is concerned about the handling of Covid-19, from prevention to patient treatment," said Dadan. In terms of prevention, the innovation introduced is sterilization chamber and disinfectant liquid, hand sanitizer, and antiseptics.

At the beginning of the pandemic, the EMR R&D Agency developed Sterilization and Antiseptic Chamber (BiSA) and Sterilization and Antiseptic Room (SERITI) and produced sanitation liquid. BiSA and SERITI are used to disinfect the clothes or Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) of healthcare workers from bacteria or virus. Four BiSA units had been handed over to hospitals caring for Covid-19 patients, namely Pertamina Central Hospital (RSPP), Universitas Indonesia University Hospital (RSUI), Athlete Village Emergency Hospital, and the Army's Central Hospital (RSPAD) Gatot Subroto. Currently, all healthcare workers of the Athlete Village must go through the BiSA to sterilize their clothes and bodies from SARS-CoV-2 contamination at the end of their shift.

Since 16 March 2020, the EMR R&D Agency's biodiesel lab and pilot plant have produced disinfectant liquid and hand sanitizer. The composition and procedure to make the two solutions have met the recommendation of World Health Organization (WHO) and Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM). Both solutions have been used to disinfect the office buildings of EMR R&D Agency, other work units of Ministry of EMR, hospitals caring for Covid-19 patients, people living near EMR buildings, and other public areas. The EMR R&D Agency has so far distributed 5,975 liters of hand sanitizer and 6,956 liters of disinfectants. (IY)
