Indonesia and Japan will Host AZEC Ministerial Meeting 2024

Together with Japan, Indonesia is ready to take a pivotal role in the Asia's journey towards a zero-emissions future as the host of the 2nd Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Ministerial Meeting held on August 20th - 21st, 2024, in Jakarta. This event is expected to ignite a global spark in the pursuit of net-zero targets.


Ministers from AZEC member countries, namely Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Brunei, and Australia will converge in Jakarta to chart a path forward. The event will also feature the AZEC Business Forum on August 21st, 2024, as a platform to mobilize business entities decarbonization efforts and foster strategic partnerships and future collaboration through business matching.


The meeting will yield substantial outcomes, including the 2nd AZEC Ministerial Joint Statement, publication of 70 Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) for new AZEC projects (30 of which are Indonesian-led), and the launching of the Asian Zero Emission Center. These achievements signify a major step forward in regional decarbonization efforts.


"With this surge of new projects, including 30 projects led by Indonesia, we expect a wave of increased investment and collaboration in decarbonization efforts," said Agus Cahyono Adi, the Head of the of Communication, Public Information Services, and Cooperation Bureau of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in Jakarta, Thursday (8/8).


The new initiatives will include electricity, transportation, and industry sectors as the meeting paves the way for enhanced cooperation in finance, human resource development, as well as cutting-edge policy and technology.


Agus emphasized the critical role of the meeting in demonstrating Indonesia and other AZEC members' unwavering dedication in achieving net-zero emissions. This event also serves as a pivotal platform for translating commitments into concrete actions.


Several high-impact MoUs will be inked during the meeting. Notably, the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on Energy Sector between Indonesia and Japan, and the MoU on Cooperation in Energy Sector Decarbonization between the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and NEDO focusing on the deployment of cutting-edge clean energy technologies and energy efficiency measures.


"This Indonesia - Japan partnership underscores our shared vision in addressing climate change challenges. By harnessing clean technology and optimizing energy efficiency implementation, we are unlocking new avenues for the growth of energy sector," Agus concluded.


With a robust launching of initiatives and collaborations, the 2nd AZEC Ministerial Meeting is intended to catalyze Asian regions efforts in achieving zero emission goals and encouraging sustainable economic growth.
