Residents in NTT-Timor Leste Border Enjoy 24-Hour Electricity

Residents in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT)-Timor Leste border can now enjoy electricity 24 hours non-stop thanks to operational increase of Oepoli diesel power plant in North Netemnanu village, Kupang Regency.

"Today I received news that PLN has operated the Oepoli electricity system in the border of NTT-Timor Leste, from previously 12 hours to 24 hours non-stop. The government has continuously pushed PLN to provide better access to electricity for the public, especially for residents of the 3T (frontier, outermost, and least developed) regions," said Head of Bureau of Communication, Public Information Services, and Cooperation of Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR), Agung Pribadi, in Jakarta ( 20/6).

One of the community leaders of North Netemnanu village, Andrea Mora, is grateful for the electricity access that the residents can now enjoy non-stop. "Thanks be to God, we, the people of East Amfoang subregency, can now have electricity in Oepoli for 24 hours; please accept our heartfelt thanks," said Mora, as quoted from an official release of state electricity company PT PLN (Persero).

PLN's NTT General Manager, Agustinus Jatmiko, expected that the 24-hour electricity will be useful to raise the productivity of local communities.

"I hope that the residents in Oepoli, community leaders, and local government agencies can use the electrical energy productively, so that the economy of the Oepoli communities will improve," said Jatmiko.

Jatmiko added that efforts had to be made to electrify the border village. PLN had to increase its generating capacity by bringing in a 160 kiloWatt (kW) diesel engine and one transformer from the province capital Kupang with a 7-hour travel time.

"For your information, Oepoli village is located in East Amfoang subregency which is notorious for its steep terrain and difficult to reach because we have to pass through rivers and creeks," explained Jatmiko. (IY)
