Energy Saving Ambassador, young generation for the future

Young people are the nation's assets. The program to raise awareness about energy efficiency involving young people is expected to create an impactful difference on sustainable energy consumption. These young people, referred to as "Energy Saving Ambassadors," are members of small groups from various schools in East Java Province.

One of the activities of the Energy Saving Ambassadors is the "energy saving campaign" in Surabaya. This year, Indonesian Institute for Energy Economics (IIEE) assisted in activities to increase awareness of energy efficiency and energy conservation in 24 schools, namely 8 elementary schools, 8 junior high schools and 8 high schools/vocational schools. Each school is represented by 5 students who are Energy Saving Ambassadors together with 1 Assistant Teacher as the energy manager. In sum, there are 120 Energy Saving Ambassadors and 24 Energy Managers in East Java Province ready to execute the activity.

The 24 schools were given 3 online training sessions in April 2022. Assistance and evaluation were carried out by IIEE 3 times, twice directly at the schools and once through an online meeting. The offline assistance provided an overview of how the implementation of this program can be carried out properly by the Energy Saving Ambassadors. At the end of the program, the Ambassadors were engaged in the energy saving implementation competition held on 25-28 July 2022 where IIEE assisted in the arrangement.

This activity is expected to foster good behavior in energy consumption at home schools, and within the surrounding community. It promotes an energy-saving culture, not only for competitions at the end of the program, but also a habitual and behavioral change applied by children at school and at home and in their respective families.

The election of Energy Saving Ambassadors in the selected schools is an activity initiated by IIEE in collaboration with Southeast Asia Energy Transition Partnership(ETP), hosted under the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS)to assist the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR)'s Energy Savings Campaign program in the Education Sector of Indonesia.

Energy efficiency is a crucial activity in achieving energy transition goals. For this reason, ETP partners with IIEE and MEMR to empower the students from all education levels through the awareness building campaign because it does not only help to increase the awareness among the young individuals but also contributes to an impactful and sustainable behavioral change which can later help to reduce CO2 emissions at an individual level.
